What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eye lift or eyelid surgery, is a procedure performed to restore a more youthful appearance to the area around the eye. This can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. The procedure can reverse or diminish the effects of the many common causes of aging around the eyes, including:

  • Gravity
  • Sun damage
  • Hereditary factors
  • Loss of skin elasticity

The results of these issues can be troublesome. As we age, the fat pockets around the eye can begin to bulge. At the same time, the upper eyelid skin can begin to hang down further and even obstruct vision in some instances. More often though, these natural changes simply lead to a “tired” appearance which is unwelcome. For women, makeup smudging can become an increasing and annoying issue. On the lower lids, the effect is bulges or bags as well as wrinkles. As we’ll see now, eyelid surgery can improve all of these concerns.

What Will Happen During My Blepharoplasty Procedure?

Your procedure is determined by the type of blepharoplasty you need. For example, if you have drooping or sagging eyelids, your eyelids will be lifted through the excision of excess skin, and a small amount of fat can also be removed, if necessary. Upper-eyelid blepharoplasty is done through an incision made in the upper eyelid crease and can also be performed with an incision just below the lower lash line.

On the other hand, if a weak or elongated levator muscle is responsible for the drooping eyelid, it, too, can be augmented to minimize the problem; the levator muscle lifts the upper eyelid. Another incision on the inside of the lower lid can be made for patients who have very little excess skin but who have bulges and dark circles appearing under the eyes. No skin will be removed in this variety of the procedure.

What Can I Expect From Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Recovery?

Several side effects are common and completely normal after eyelid surgery. These typically include swelling and bruising in the surgical area, accompanied by mild to moderate pain, blurred vision and a sensitivity to light. Rest assured, these symptoms are temporary and will resolve in a few days — they are not a sign of problems with your surgery. Dr. Fisher will prescribe pain medications for you before your surgery and provide you with complete instructions to manage your recovery before your treatment as well.

You can ensure a safe and speedy recovery by following Dr. Fisher’s instruction closely, preparing your home in advance of your surgery and arranging for help immediately after your procedure, including a ride home. Other simple ways to protect your surgical area and promote recovery include:

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes
  • Use cold compresses to minimize swelling when necessary
  • Wear sunglasses to help with light sensitivity and to help protect healing incisions

Most patients can return to work within a few days of treatment, although a full recovery can take longer, in some cases, up to three weeks. Plan to take a week off work after your San Francisco eyelid surgery to be on the safe side. Also, plan to avoid strenuous activity or contact sports which can affect your results during this time. Focusing on your recovery and allowing your body sufficient time to heal is the best way to promote the results of your surgery and return to your everyday schedule more quickly.

Are There Risks With Blepharoplasty?

Possible risks from blepharoplasty include:

  • General infection, bleeding, or scarring
  • Dry eyes
  • Difficulty seeing
  • Double Vision

In the vast majority of cases, these risks are minimal, and the benefits of the procedure far outweigh any potential problems. If the risks of blepharoplasty concern you, Dr. Fisher will be happy to discuss them with you in-depth during your consultation to your complete satisfaction.

Blepharoplasty & Other Cosmetic Procedures

Having a blepharoplasty will not necessarily take away the dark circles under your eyes or treat crow’s feet. However, the procedure can dramatically improve the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids and improve the overall appearance of your eyes. Other concerns with your eyes can be minimized and improved through separate treatments that can be performed alongside your eyelid surgery in San Francisco.

Botox and Dysport can reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles around the eyes (wrinkles caused by muscle contractions). HA fillers can improve static wrinkles, replacing lost volume, boosting collagen and elastin and improving skin tone in a single treatment. Alternative eye treatments may also provide better relief of your symptoms in some cases.

While a blepharoplasty is the right procedure for some individuals, a brow lift may be more appropriate for others. Since drooping brows may be the cause of the unwanted symptoms, a brow lift procedure can provide patients with the rejuvenation they seek and a much better outcome. Dr. Fisher will recommend the best course of treatment based on an in-person exam during your consultation and give you the pros and cons of each available option.

Asian Blepharoplasty

Asian blepharoplasty, more commonly called Asian eyelid surgery or double eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic eyelid procedure done to add a permanent fold to an Asian eyelid that does not have one. This surgery is not designed to make Asians look more Western, on the contrary, it simply makes the eye itself show more. In fact, many people of Asian descent already have an eyelid fold, and this surgery is therefore not indicated for them. This procedure results in beautiful exotic eyes.
