What is Botox?
Botox is a cosmetic drug that works by weakening muscle contractions. The drug is a purified protein made from botulinum toxin. It is dosed with minute amounts of the protein to deliver consistent results with few side effects.
As a mild neurotoxin, Botox affects the nerve signaling processes in targeted muscles. When the drug absorbs into muscle tissue, it prevents the transmission of nerve impulses by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that attaches to receptors in muscle cells. By blocking this release, Botox prevents muscle contractions and allows the treated muscle to relax.
Am I a candidate for Botox?
Many adults receive Botox in some form or another, depending on their needs. Some treatments deliver the smallest doses of this drug to prevent new lines from forming. Some treatments inject more areas than one and utilize more units of the drug to smooth deeper creases. Patients who consult with Dr. Fisher about Botox can expect their treatment to revolve around their unique needs.
Candidates for Botox are interested in softening and preventing frustrating problems such as:
- Frown lines
- Crow’s feet
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Lip lines
- Neckbands
- Drooping eyebrows
- Downturned corners of the mouth
- Bunny lines on the nose
What is the difference between Botox and other injectables?
Botox is an injectable that, until fairly recently, was in a league of its own. A neuromodulator is a special kind of injectable that accomplishes what dermal fillers and other injectables cannot. Where other products smooth lines and creases by adding volume to the tissue beneath the wrinkle, Botox refreshes the face by relaxing muscles. Because neuromodulators and dermal fillers work differently, they are often used together to achieve more comprehensive effects across the upper and lower areas of the face.
What are the risks of getting Botox injections?
The common use and extensive clinical study of Botox has proven that this injectable is safe and effective. The most common side effects patients experience from Botox treatment include swelling and redness. Bruising is possible and patients are encouraged to avoid blood thinners, including aspirin and alcohol, in the 24-hours before and after injections. Complications such as lowered eyebrows, asymmetry, and ptosis are possible but rarely occur. Patients sometimes develop minor achiness and flu-like symptoms that last 12 to 24 hours.
How often can I get Botox treatments?
Treatment can be repeated as often as every 3 months as needed to promote younger-looking skin.
How long do Botox results last?
It takes approximately 5 days for the results of Botox to become fully apparent. After that time, the effects of the drug gradually decline over several months. It is common for touch-ups to be scheduled about every 4 months. However, some patients can maintain satisfactory results for up to 6 months. Treatment is customized to you and your preferences.
To achieve the best results and prevent migration of Botox into surrounding tissues, it is important to avoid massaging or rubbing the area where injections are administered. Patients should also avoid lying down for one-hour post-treatment.
Are Botox injections painful?
Injections of any kind are associated with discomfort. However, Botox injections are administered using a micro-sized needle, making treatment virtually painless. Botox is injected into the superficial muscles that are involved in making facial expressions. The drug does not cause burning or other sensations as it is inserted. The only minor discomfort that a patient can expect is the pinch of the needle. Many patients don’t even notice injections thanks to the tiny size of the needle.
