So you’ve made up your mind to have an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck.) Naturally, you’re experiencing a wide range of emotions, from anxiety to stress to excitement. Just because your abdominoplasty surgery is inked on the calendar, it doesn’t mean you have to feel apprehensive. One of the best ways to help is with preparation. Take a look at some of these guidelines to empower you before the big day, ultimately helping your procedure and recovery go smoothly.
Prepare Your Home
Getting your home ready for your recovery before your surgery means being able to relax after surgery. It will alleviate stress to come home to a place that’s already tidy. Stock your recovery area with a phone that’s within reach, ice packs and loose clothing. And prepare and freeze meals ahead of time, or stock up on frozen dinners and other ready-to-eat foods. It’s also a good idea to change put on clean sheets and make sure you’re caught up on laundry.
Kick the Habit
If you smoke, you’ll need to stop at least two weeks prior to surgery. Many surgeons will not operate on a patient who isn’t willing to abstain beforehand. That’s because smoking greatly impedes the healing process. Your abdominoplasty incision scars can become large, unsightly and unable to fully heal. So say “so long” to cigarettes prior to surgery, or better yet, consider quitting entirely.
Rely on Others
The “I can do it myself” mentality isn’t going to fly after a tummy tuck. Arrange for someone to take you home and have them stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after surgery to help you get to the bathroom, bring you food and take care of your general comfort. You’re going to need plenty of rest, so also have a friend or family member take care of your kids (and your pets) for at least the first few days after surgery.
Take it Easy
The most important thing you need to do is relax. Over time, you will begin to heal and become stronger if you take it easy. Just remember – this will all pay off when you can finally enjoy a flatter, tighter stomach.
